Rolls Royce : The Tempus Dimension

Working with Visualise I designed and lit a studio environment in which to photograph the new Rolls Royce Tempus.

Working with leading design and communications agency, AKQA, we created an immersive web 360 and Virtual Reality experience to showcase the new Rolls Royce Phantom Tempus. In the custom web player you can explore the car on desktop, mobile, Google Cardboard and Oculus Quest.

To capture the car, we shot a series 360 images inside a full cove studio with a variety of different lighting states as well as a projected night sky that would enable us to place the car in a CG environment in post.

Each shot was meticulously planned in order to capture every detail inside and outside the car. In total we shot over 550 images of the car over a 12-hour shoot day. Once captured, each photograph had to be stitched into a 360 image and blended to create the right lighting and reflections. Finally, the 360 images were added to a CG environment with 3D lighting and shadows to create the high-fidelity images you see in the final product.

For the animation, we worked with our partners Silk Factory to produce the observatory and space scenes that were a crucial part of the story behind this interstellar car. This all began as sketches and mood boards before being handed off to Cinema 4D designers and then back to us for the final editing.

For the sound, our specialist, Henrik Oppermann worked together with AKQA’s creative team and Rolls Royce’s voice over artist to create the ambisonic soundtrack. When viewed in YouTube or the 360 Web Player, the sound adapts to the direction the viewer is looking in to create a more immersive experience.

The final content was delivered through a custom web player designed by our in-house UX & UI designer and built by our development partner, Abaco Digital. The web player can detect the device the viewer is using and adapt the content to suit meaning the content is optimised for Desktop, Mobile 360 (iOS & Android), Google Cardboard and Oculus Quest 2, without the need for any additional downloads.
